Chair of APPG, Lisa Nandy, to Propose Reform of British Export Credit Agency

Chair of the APPG, Lisa Nandy MP, will present a Ten Minute Rule Bill at the end of April on reform of the Export Credits Guarantee Department (ECGD).
The ECGD is a department that sits within the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills. The Jubilee Debt Campaign has campaigned for its reforms and refers to it as the ‘Department for Dodgy Deals’, given its tendencies to fund dubious business practices overseas.
The ECGD uses public money to provide insurance for private companies who are exporting to the developing world. There is little or no screening on what implications these business activities have and no conditions placed on business regarding environmental destruction, poverty and human rights abuses in some of the world’s poorest countries.
On 27th April Lisa Nandy MP will introduce a Ten Minute Rule Bill entitled The Export Credits Guarantee Department (Regulation and Reporting) Bill. This Bill would make the ECGD more transparent and accountable, and would place certain conditions on government spending.
The Bill has been co-sponsored by Roger Williams MP, Zac Goldsmith MP, Tony Cunningham MP, Bob Russell MP, Caroline Lucas MP, Eilidh Whiteford MP, Sheila Gilmore MP and Teresa Pearce MP.
