CORE, alongside other civil society organisations, independent experts, Members of the European Parliament and trade unions have written to the President of the European Commission to urge the Commission to include a human rights mandate for the Technical Expert Group on Sustainable Finance.
The Commission’s Action Plan on Financing Sustainable Growth, builds on the impressive work of the High Level Expert Group on Sustainable Finance.
As part of this Action Plan the commission has open a call for applications for the formation of a technical expert group on sustainable finance which will, inter alia, be tasked with the creation of an EU taxonomy for sustainable assets and activities.
The letter calls on the Commission to include human rights expertise in the technical expert group from the outset, and ensure that a human rights-based approach is adopted in the development and classification of all activities meant to contribute to climate mitigation and adaptation.
Climate mitigation and adaption activities can have adverse human rights impacts, it is therefore essential that human rights safeguards are embedded in projects of these kinds.
